Presentation:

The body odour edition

Odorama 11 - with Lauryn Mannigel, Jasper de Groot, Marit Mihklepp, Caro Verbeek

3 Nov 2016

Without us even being aware our bodies silently communicate with each other. We can communicate through our body odours, pheromones and even with odorless molecules. We transmit information about fertility, gender, age and - according the latest research - our emotional state as well. However, the topic of body odours is still taboo for many. Reasons enough for artists to address this issue and show us how prejudiced we really are and what we can gain if we start embracing our natural odours.

Odorama is a collaboration between Mediamatic and Caro Verbeek.

Lauryn Mannigel

Artist and curator Lauryn Mannigel current research investigates multi-sensory perception and experience of art by exploring smell and taste’s social and cultural values, meanings and uses. Her passion for smell led her to co-found the Smell Lab (Berlin, 2015) and to organize the Smell Lab reading group (Berlin, 2015). At Mediamatic she will do a short residence followed by a presentation of her work during Odorama and a performance during the Museumnacht 2016.

Humans use multiple senses to navigate the social world. Among these, our sense of smell is arguably the most underestimated one. One intriguing function of the sense of smell is its social communicative function. Research has shown that human odors can convey information about a range of states (e.g., emotions, sickness) and traits (e.g., individuality, gender). Yet, what underlies the communicability of these states and traits via smell? This talk should shed some light on this fascinating, yet to date poorly understood capacity.

Marit Mihklepp

In the recent past Marit was working on microbial perfumes made from her own sweat and bacteria. Now she is continuing her work with microbes and the human body as she is working on a book studying the (microbial) communication between people and visualising this. She will present her research and first results.
