Church Amstelkerk
The Church Amstelkerk was built in between 1668 and 1670 as a temporary church for the residents of the newly constructed second part of the canal district. The design of city architect Daniël Stalpaert was executed so plainly, that the building was known as a ‘sermon stable’. Ultimately, plans for a large stone church on the Amstelveld – the square right behind the Amstelkerk – were never executed and the temporary church is still standing nowadays.
Stadsherstel acquired the building by the end of the 1980s, when it was in a very poor state. Highly necessary restoration works were completed only a few years later, changing the church into the offices of Stadsherstel. The nave is being rented out for events, and serves as a regular stage for several orchestras. On Sunday mornings, sermons are still being held.
