Japanese Knotweed Season 2024

Every spring, Mediamatic organises a season around Japanese knotweed. Knotweed is a fast-growing plant known in Europe for being considered invasive. What many do not know, however, is that this plant species has a host of positive properties. During this season we will explore how to live in harmony with this controversial plant.

Jasper, Uno, and Aslı will unveil the fascinating science and history behind this misunderstood plant, and explore how our relationship with the Japanese Knotweed can ignite discussions about research, circularity in food systems, and our evolving understanding of nature within urban environments.

Jasper Riehm

Jasper Riehm, a former Michelin-starred chef turned urban green artist, now excels in blending culinary arts with urban ecology in Amsterdam. As a member of Cityplot, he leads foraging tours and constructs living willow domes, known as "That Weird Plant Guy," Jasper's work embodies sustainability, aiming to reconnect city dwellers with nature.

Aslı Hatipoğlu

Aslı is a textile culinary artist who's interdisciplinary social practice focuses on curating participatory dinners and installations that shed light on how culinary history and agricultural politics are changing our relationship to food. From working with micro-scale bacteria and yeasts to insects such as the domesticated silkworm, Hatipoğlu critically investigates ways of relating to our environment and ourselves. She researches production supply chains through performative acts to shed light to how humans influence other living organisms.

Uno Fujisawa

Uno Fujisawa, born in Japan in 1982 and currently based in Amsterdam, is not only an artist but also a chef. Her artistic endeavours are rooted in a profound exploration of the seemingly simple act of eating, a ritual that is universally repeated every day. Fujisawa is also interested in themes and activities related to soil, agriculture, food production, the tools we use in our daily life, and consumption cycles. In her work there is an intent on bringing nature, food, design and art into a whole, researching in what ways the ordinary can become extraordinary.
