SUPERMARKET has been arranged since 2007 by a small group most of whom are artists themselves. Supermarket is a development of Minimarket, which was held at Konstnärshuset in February 2006 in reaction to the new commercial art fair Market.
Initiated and organised by artists, this project has rapidly evolved from a modest group of local initiatives to a full-fledged international art exposition that has made its mark and helped firmly establish Stockholm on the art world map.
Every year SUPERMARKET has relocated; starting in 2006 in small scale in an art nouveau palace, the following year with international presence in the same site, 2008 moving to an industrial space, then to a newly built designer luxury hotel (Clarion Hotel Stockholm) and now to the very heart of Stockholm - Kulturhuset (the Centre Pompidou of Stockholm).
International network
SUPERMARKET 2010 builds on the tremendous success of SUPERMARKET 2008 and 2009, which featured exhibitors from Canada, Germany, Israel, Netherlands ( De Service Garage, Project Space 1646, Nest) Poland, Rumania, Russia, USA, the UK, and, of course, Sweden and the neighbouring Nordic countries, all part of a growing international trend of artist-run galleries, project spaces, artist collectives, independent curators and publications.
Why an art fair for artist run galleries?
It is becoming increasingly common for artists to take matters into their own hands and set up galleries and project spaces. Supermarket is an arena for such artist run initiatives. The aim is for Supermarket to be a place where a wider public can partake in what is happening on the artist run scene. The art fair wants to offer the visitor unexpected meetings and experiences rather than focusing on sales.
Supermarket art fair focus at Artist Run gallerys or organisations
Artist-run galleries regularly staging public exhibitions in their own exhibition spaces and other artist initiatives can be invited to exhibit at SUPERMARKET 2010. We never accept single artists. As a single artist we urge you to start a independent gallery or join some initiative of a kind.
