Markus Schmidt is the founder and CEO of Biofaction, a research and science communications company, and has an educational background in electronic engineering, biology and environmental risk assessment. For the last 10 years, he carried out environmental risk assessment, safety and public perception studies in a number of science and technology fields, including GM-crops, gene therapy and synthetic biology. He served as an advisor to the European Group on Ethics (EGE) of the European Commission and the US Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues. Schmidt also aims to contribute to a better interaction between science, society and art though public talks, documentary films, the organisation of the Synthetic biology science, Art and Film Festival, Bio:Fiction, and the bioart exhibition synth-ethic.
