Over the course of six Tuesdays we’ ll be taking a leap of faith and challenging the Food Safety Authority. Resistance against the demonization of expired, but irresistibly good food. Each Tuesday a different chef will determine the grocery list and menu.
The dinner is free, but in return you might have to stir, chop and mix yourself. And always bring one or more of the ingredients on the grocery list. Rummage through the depths of your fridge, and bring us whatever you dig up. Another tip is to look out for the 35%-off stickers at your local grocery store. The only (obvious) condition is that you have to be prepared to take a bite of your own food...
To the expiration date and beyond
Unless your food smells weird or has undergone physical transformations, it’s probably still safe for consumption. Expiration dates are determined with a wide margin, and aren’t the same as use-by dates. All the expiration date indicates is that after that point the producer can't guarantee the quality. However, in most cases food will taste just fine up to several days after this date.
Expired food might be the most delicious thing you've ever had. Good wines improve with age, and cheese becomes significantly tastier after a few days on the shelf. Now imagine the unparalleled taste sensation of an Expiration Date Dinner!
