The title of this exhibition is a pun on GPS, the global positioning system, taken the name literally to describe five critical media positions towards globalized technological and social systems.
A common theme is their reflection of information technology in relation toculture and global politics: A website that tracks and overlays Internet images related to geopolitical search terms; golden picture frames around political leaders mapping their years in power and the corruption and freedom of press in their countries. Other works consist of Barbie dolls mutated into musical controllers for performance artists, a game joystick taking up a life of its own, and a feminist machine that reflects how computing grew out of sewing technology.
