Artificial Pigeon Nests
Do pigeons fall in love in prefabricated nests? What, exactly, happens when birds build nests? Drawing on the work of nest-philosophers such as Vinciane Despret, Michel de Montaigne and Gaston Bachelard, we will explore the question “How do you nest?”. Answering this question will help us care for urban wildlife. But nesting, when recognised as central to culture, also holds crucial lessons for human survival. Can we learn to make spaces with animals not just to survive in, but also to fall in love?

Clemens Driessen is a researcher with interests in Animal Studies and Philosophy of Design, currently working as an assistant professor at Wageningen University. His research starts from the idea that nature is deeply cultural. This has implications for understanding agriculture, animals, nature and food: as locally situated and embedded in social as well as material relations.
