Souq Waqif

Reconstruction of the centre of Doha

The reconstruction of Souq Waqif started in 2004 under the guidance and supervision of His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the Emir of Qatar. The reconstruction process began after a prolonged study of the traditional Qatari use of materials and architectural techniques, with the aid of aerial photographs taken of the area in the 1940’s and 50’s. In addition to these photos, official records and stories told by the people who lived in, worked at and frequented the old site were used as a guide for the restoration programme.

Today, we are able to admire the results of His Highness’s efforts to preserve Qatar’s historical heritage. Inspired by his vision, the Waqif Art Center was created.
Today the Souq is characterized by diverse areas ranging from spice markets, textile markets, souvenir markets to a “new” restaurant area where you can taste and enjoy food from around the world (Morocan, Lebanese, Armenian, Iraqi, Italian cuisine are all offered within the restaurant alley). Art galleries are now rising in the area as well.
