Sitting between magnified images of fungal cultures and the sterile environment of our clean room, this chair oscillates between and encompasses these two worlds.

Tuimelaar installation view - A work by Titia Ex from 2003, on show in the Paddestoelen Paradijs exhibition at Mediamatic Bank. The sculpture "Tuimelaar" is actually a tumbling chair. It was in the Paddestoelen Paradijs show because its close resemblance to a mushroom. Material: resin. Size: approximately 1 meter high. Photo by Anna Meijer. Titia Ex, Anna Meijer

This chair was designed by Titia Ex who found inspiration in what the Japanese call Ma: the way to the moment of moving, or a simultaneous awareness of form and not form. The chair rests on a point and will naturally move as soon as someone sits. The user can not take place but should take place. Through the interaction, the distinction between the two and the relationship between object and subject is deactivated. The work of Titia Ex is a dialogue with the physical environment and is incomplete without it. It makes a natural connection between space, material and viewer. Space as a habitat, a living organism. This chair was kindly loaned to us by the ZETEL Foundation.
