CALL FOR WORKS
PIXILERATIONS * invites artists, musicians and film/video makers to submit work for the 2010 showcase of New Media art. This year’s theme is “Pairings” -- two are better than one. While Pixilerations does not require submissions to align with a theme, we are looking for work that:
a) pairs media (eg: sculpture and video, digital images with objects);
b) is the result of pairings of artists (eg: video artists and painter, digital artist and dancer), or uses duos of contrasting elements;
c) links different forms of working (eg: drawing and moving images, visual collage and music);
d) joins content drawn from different realms (eg: science and art, anthropology and photography);
e) employs social pairings (eg: war and peace, fear and security).
THE SUBMISSION PERIOD FOR WORK HAS BEEN EXTENDED TO APRIL 15, 2010
Please read the submission instructions for specific media categories below.
NOTE: Applications must be submitted online through link provided below.
GALLERY WORK AND PUBLIC ART
Installations & Gallery works: Installations will be mounted in two spaces: the Sol Koffler Gallery in the Rhode Island School of Design’s Center for Integrative Technology Building, and an additional alternative gallery space in Providence, to be announced at a later date. Works will be in spaces with visual (but not acoustic) separation. Care should be taken when planning and installing your work to minimize the impact of audio/video bleed onto the work of other participating artists.
NOTE: Artists must provide their own technology resources (including power strips & extension cords). A limited amount of equipment may be available upon explicit request (excluding computers or monitors). Artists will install their own work.
Public Art: We are considering proposals for installations and/or performances beyond the gallery walls. Proposals should include specific production information to allow us to determine the work’s feasibility in the context of Pixilerations.
FILM/VIDEO WORK
Video works will be screened at the Cable Car Cinema in collaboration with the Magic Lantern Experimental Film Collaborative (October 6th, subject to revision). Please limit your final submission to 12 minutes in length. Live video may be submitted under the “performance” category below.
NOTE: Please submit works as a weblink in the on-line application [NOT a file], hosted on YouTube, Vimeo or another web-based platform. Provide an accurate URL. Pixilerations would prefer video works to be in NTSC format if possible.
PERFORMANCE WORKS
Pixilerations will feature concert-hall presentations, as well as “ClubPixil” -- experimental electronic performances in a nightclub-like environment. Performances will be on first and/or second weekends of October. Pixilerations seeks interactive performance works incorporating elements such as live acoustic or electric instruments, dance, electronic music, and real-time music and/or video. We will also consider sound-only acousmatic/radiophonic works, in stereo or 5.1 (NOTE: all works must be submitted in stereo for judging purposes.)
A concert 5.1 sound system and computer projection will be provided for the two interactive performance evenings. Additional equipment (microphones, monitors, etc.) will also be provided. Composers accepted with 5.1 acousmatic pieces will have the following options for playback: DVD (DVD-A, or DVD-V with Dolby or DTS encoding), or clearly labeled AIFF/WAV sound files.
NOTE: Pixilerations is unable to provide performers – it is up to the submitting artist to provide all necessary performers and instruments.
When submitting your piece, please note your preference for one of the following performance venues:
- ClubPixil -- experimental electronic performances in a club-like environment
- Concert-hall performance -- seated auditorium environment
