The authority of kings, dictators and the state is traditionally based on God, or one or the other historical necessity or idea. Spinoza unmasks them all: only fear and self-interest can keep a state in tact or a ruler on his throne. Once the state makes it impossible for people to feel safe and pursue safety, only the fear of force will impress. And that creates animosity between state and civilians. Spinoza said something still revolutionary in great parts of the world in 2012: the people have the full right to rid themselves of a system that has become the enemy. Law abiding is only reasonable, when you gain from it and when you can live in safety and freedom.
