The Temporary Museum of Smelly Toys

Many of us grew up with smelly toys. Who doesn’t remember play-doh, inflatable pools, and the chipped paint on tiny wooden cars? And a whiff of plastic can take us back to our childhood.

“The smell of plastic is a portal to happiness', Irene de Craen (art historian).

Star Wars TIE fighter pilot - Olfactory artist Hagen Betzwieser made a photo with scented action figures that will be discussed in Odorama 40: Odor Ludens. He says: „As a kid I was a huge collector of Star Wars action figures, well, I still am. I have never paid a lot of attention to the olfactory dimension of these toys until my friend Caro Verbeek has made me aware of the fruity story of the 1982 Imperial TIE Fighter Pilot. Almost 40 years later, I sniff out some of my childhood memories.“ Hagen Betzwieser

The (intentionally added) scents of toys are often arbitrary. This results in a very fluid and gender-related meaning attributed to certain odors, that can differ dramatically between people. Strawberry can either remind grown-ups of their masculine TIE fighter pilot or their girly Strawberry shortcake. The smell of plastic could either remind you of global pollution, or carefree juvenile bliss, and patchouli could evoke memories of ‘Stinkor’ when you’re in your forties, or hippies, if you’re sixty.

Unfortunately, most of our childhood scents have disappeared. Plastic softeners are prohibited, our mothers washed our dirty stuffed animals, and opening our ‘mint-in-box’ collector’s item comes close to sacrilege.

During this pop-up smelly toy exhibition, you were able to inhale or reminisce about the lost scents of your childhood.
