This is ASCII, a people's communication lab in a squatted building in Amsterdam.
ASCII is set up using recycled old computers and using free software to bring broader access to technology for everybody. ASCII is a collective of free and autonomous thinkers, technically and politically aware hackers and free software developers.
Javastraat 38 was not the first nor the last place where hackers struggle for freedom from commercial interests speculating on technology and its accessibility by the people. The right to communicate is everyone's right, and free software implements it!
ASCII in 2006
ASCII has been in a phase of transition from a free public internet cafe promoting the use of free software, into a hacklab and clearinghouse for hacktivists, geeks, media activists and all those who are interested in related themes.
As the next step in this transition, we are changing our opening times and activities to better suit that new role ASCII wants to fulfill.
