Art lovers and collectors will find a broad range of modern and contemporary art in all price brackets and covering all movements.
The most exciting highlights this year include works from artists who will also be shown in some of the nearby museums of the region, such as Joel Shapiro, Thomas Struth, Arnulf Rainer, Heinz Mack, Lucie Stahl, Otto Dix, Tony Cragg. Among others Karsten Greve (Cologne/ St. Moritz/ Paris) has high-calibre bronze by the New Yorker artist Joel Shapiro (Untitled, 2010) who is currently shown at the Museum Ludwig, Cologne; Karsten Greve and Hauser + Wirth (London/New York/Zürich) will also present works by the recently deceased artist Louise Bourgeois. Annely Juda Fine Art (London) will bring blue chip staples including Anthony Caro and David Hockney. One of the highlights at Rüdiger Schöttle (Munich) will be a c-print by Thomas Struth (Grazing Incidence Spectrometer, 2010), one of the most important representatives of contemporary German photography, whose current exhibition at the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen (Dusseldorf) is a full success. Bernd Klüser (Munich), whose personal drawing collection is currently shown at the Von der Heyd Museum in Wuppertal, excells with a Lenin portrait by Andy Warhol. Andy Warhol will also be shown by Hans Mayer (Dusseldorf), Salis & Vertes (Zurich/ Salzburg), and Heinz Holtmann (Cologne). Florian Sundheimer (Munich), among others, will be showing an early work by Georg Baselitz (Der Orientale,1959) whereas Fred Jahn offers a recent work from 2010 (1. Mai, 6.IV.2010). Further galleries bringing Baselitz to Cologne are: Michael Werner, Fred Jahn, DEWEER gallery, Bo Bjerggaard, Haas, and Springer & Winckler. Johnen (Berlin) has work by important names like Stephan Balkenhol, Wilhelm Sasnal and Thomas Ruff and will also be showing the sculpture Egg Bucket on stool with pedestal (24 x 38 x 35 inch) by Düsseldorf-based Hans-Peter Feldmann (2003). The special feature on Panamarenko in the fair's entrance hall will also be reflected in the fair, hence Kewenig (Cologne/ Palma de Mallorca) offers museum-quality works of the Belgium artist such as „Japanese Flying Pak 3" (2001). Lelong (Paris/Zurich) will bring works by Jannis Kounellis, who will also be on view in the Galerie Kewenig (Cologne) during the course of the fair.
Johann König (Berlin) offers c-prints by Annettte Kelm, who won the Art Cologne price for New Positions in 2005 and will be shown in the Bonner Kunstverein this year. The special sectors Open Space and New Contemporaries will spotlight cutting-edge trends in contemporary art. Hence, Jack Hanley (New York) is planning a powerful show of furniture works by Austrian Erwin Wurm (Open Space); Elisabeth & Klaus Thoman (Innsbruck) will also be offering works from Erwin Wurm. Daniel Buchholz (Cologne/ Berlin) is putting on a show with R.H. Quaytman - in his gallery as well as bringing her works to the fair - together with other artist such as Isa Gensken (Hommage à Jasper Johns, 2009). The New Contemporaries sector is the place for young emerging galleries and its studio-fresh art and experimental work by young artists. Galerie Jocelyn Wolff (Paris) presents new works by the performance duo Prinz Gholam - Notman-Boxer 2008. Ancient Modern (London) presents works by Alan Kane and Des Hughes, Foxy Production (New York) is showing the hot American artist Sterling Ruby who takes his subject matter from a wide range of sources, including marginalized societies, maximum security prisons, modernist architecture, artifacts and antiquities, graffiti etc. sterling Ruby will also be shown by Sprüth Magers (Berlin/ London). In addition to Foxy Production, twelve other participants from the United States will present their wares at the Art Cologne, including Broadway 1602 (New York), Andrew Kreps (New York), 1301PE (Los Angeles), Team (New York), amongst others.
The scope and quality of exhibits in the section for Classical Modern are remarkable. Swiss dealers Henze & Ketterer are offering museum-quality masterpieces by Brücke artists. Among the highlights are oils by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (Totentanz der Mary Wigman, 1926) and Erich Heckel (Boot im Schlick, 1907). Düsseldorf's Remmert und Barth will also bring works on paper by Kirchner. Galleria D'Arte Maggiore (Bologna) will be showing works from Fontana and Morandi, among them the fair and beautiful oil (Natura Morta 1948). The Berlin Galerie Berinson will present a wide range of early 20th century avant-garde including works by Max Ernst and Kurt Schwitters. Gallery Ludorf (Düsseldorf), Salis & Vertes (Salzburg/Zurich), Koch (Hannover) and Utermann (Dortmund) are bringing works by Emil Nolde.
