How do micro-organisms exchange resources with the environment? What happens underground as huge complex networks of fungi trade nutrients with plant roots? According to TOBY KIERS, these microbial underground markets function very similarly to our own economic system. What can we learn from them?
There is a growing interest in using mycelium as a material for practical and aesthetic applications. American artist PHIL ROSS has a strong interest in bio-engineering and mycology; he uses living organisms as the inspiration and means by which he makes his work. Through the design and creation of highly controlled environments he manipulates, nurtures and transforms a variety of living species into sculpture.
Showing typical processes in different biotopes, artist ZEGER REYERS makes objects that are shaped by living materials, such as furniture and machines that are overgrown by mushrooms or chairs that are sunk in the Oosterschelde to get them populated by mussels. Reyer's artworks provoke a new way of seeing these natural processes.
