AN APARTMENT FOR A GYMNASTIC TEACHER--- PART II continues the architectural exploration that Brazilian artist Julia Retz developed as part of her graduation work for the Sandberg Institute. The installation, born within the temporary premises of The Office and departing from an image of an interior by Marcel Breuer, questions the limits and openings of architectural and spatial reconfiguration, and the notion of site specificity, ultimately inviting the viewer into the multiple narratives of spaces, fictive or real.
JULIA RETZ works at the intersection of art and architecture. Her work makes often use of existing buildings and monuments: by investigating and elaborating on their original architectural purpose, Retz reflects on and reconfigures their present meaning, continually questioning the limits and possibilities of what constitutes the replication, reconstruction or re-staging of architectural space. In 2011 she obtained a BA in Audiovisual Media at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, and recently finished her MA in Interior Architecture at the Sandberg Institute in Amsterdam.
