Professor Philip Hayward is an active researcher in Island Studies. He is co-editor of Shima: The International Journal of Research into island Cultures - www.shimajournal.org- and is also international network convenor of SICRI: The Small Island Cultures Research Initiative - www.sicri.org - He has published books, journal articles and book chapters on various aspects of island cultures and he has ongoing research projects in the Amami and Tokara islands of southern Japan and in the south eastern Pacific.
Professor Hayward has previously received two Australia Research Council Discovery grants and is a Chief Investigator on an ARC Collaborative Grant team led by Professor Huib Schippers (Griffith University Conservatorium of Music) researching Sustainable MusicalFutures (2009-2014). His most recent research has concerned tourism and local culture in Hainan Island - China (fieldwork undertaken in April 2009) and on tourism, local culture and salmon aquaculture on Chiloe island Chile (fieldwork undertaken in January 2010).
Outside of academe, he is actively involved in rainforest reforestation in the Northern Rivers area of northern New South Wales.
