Twombly was influenced by American abstract expressionism, in combination with the écriture automatique of European surrealism. Practically no one knows that he has been producing polaroid photographs for over fifty years. He finds his subjects in and around his house and studio, both in Italy and in Virginia.
As a photographer, Twombly still has the eye of a painter, who explores rather than captures his subjects - still lifes, flowers, interiors, seascapes. His 'dry prints', a specialized version of color prints from a copy machine, are being shown for the first time in the Netherlands.
