Question:

Do minorities serve a purpose, or are they merely a problem?

Spinoza’s idea that there’s only one reality, suggests that no phenomenon is more real than the next. Everything is equally real, so all opinions are worth investigating and trying to understand.

People are also equally real. Minorities of ethnical or religious nature are a fact, and their numbers don’t limit their right of existence or freedom of speech. You could state that their purpose is to form a problem for the majority.

And that’s a healthy test for the social system. If it succeeds in protecting minorities and giving them the same rights as the majority, safety and freedom of others will be guaranteed. When minorities are facing troubles, by exclusion, ballyhoo, prosecution or a lack of legal rights, others will see their safety and freedom becoming endangered.

Minorities are like canaries in a coal mine.
