Phylum of Protozoa (Urtiere); - main class of (Rhizopoda); - class of Thalamophora (Kammerlinge); - legion of Foraminifera or Perforata (Siebwandige).
Thalamophora of this plate are associated with Foraminifera illustrated on plate 2; their delicately small lime shell is sieve-shaped, perforated by numerous small holes out of which thread-like, flexible Pseudopodia advance. These changeable plasma filaments (illustrated in plate 12, fig. 8) are emissions of the soft living body that is encased in a lime shell (cf. explanation of plates 2 and 12). Foraminifera are diversified in mono-chambered (Monothalamia, fig. 1-10) and multi-chambered forms (Polythalamia, fig. 11-22); even the latter are mono-chambered during their youth, attaching numerous new, interconnected chambers later on. These chambers are either organized in a row (fig. 20, 21), in two alternating rows (fig. 11-14) or in spiral-shape (fig. 16-19).
