Otomo Yoshihide (JP)
Improvisational guitarist, turntablist and composer Otomo Yoshihide was born August 1, 1959 in Yokohama, Japan; the son of an engineer, as a child he built his own radio and electronic oscillator, and as a teen began creating sound collages by means of open-reel tape recorders. During high school, Yoshihide performed in a local rock band before moving on to free jazz, influenced primarily by saxophonist Kaoru Abe and guitarist Masayuki Takayanagi; while a university student, he also became fascinated with ethnic music, and in 1981 traveled to Hainan, China to research the area's musical culture. Upon returning to Tokyo, Yoshihide began regularly performing free improvisation sets at the local Goodman club, although he maintained a relatively low profile until 1987, when he appeared in a duo with saxophonist Junji Hirose in addition to concurrent stints in the bands No Problem and ORT. In 1990, Yoshihide joined bassist Kato Hideki's group Player Piano and also formed his own noise rock group, Ground Zero. From 1992 to 1994, he also led the Double Unit Orchestra. Other Yoshihide-helmed groups of the period included Mosquito Paper and Sampling Virus Project; following the 1998 dissolution of Ground Zero, his work moved increasingly towards minimalism in projects including I.S.O. and Filament. Fedde ten Berge (NL)
Being a composer and improvisor of electronic music, Fedde's motivation for making music is to compose space in electronic sounds. This will create a physical happening for the listener which is free-standing from the loudspeaker. He wants to use the possibilities and limitations who are given by electronics therefor he builds his own soft- and hardware.
Together with Luc van Weelden, Fedde developed a turntable performance which incorporates the use of Lego robots, a modified mixer and turntable. With the use of an Arduino, is he able to use an analog mixer as an interface to control dedicated software. Applying a computer controlled eightstep sequencer to a modified pitchcontrol of a turntable, allows him to switch digitally in between rotational speeds.
Fedde received a Master Music and Technology in 2007 at the HKU and is currently busy with a second Master at the Institute of Sonology at the Royal Conservatory in the Hague.
Luc van Weelden (NL)
Luc van Weelden (1983) is a software and hardware developer interested in creating intuitive and creative instrument interfaces and algorithmic systems for performances and installations. He has graduated for the European Media Master of Arts (EMMA) program at the HKU in August 2007, his main subject was Composition and Music Technology. During his study he worked on audio and video software for performances, installations and algorithmic compositions of himself and for Dogtroop, Anne la Berge, Donemus and Paul Oomen.
Luc is also part of the collective “Sonosctruct~”. This group was initiated by Salvador Breed, Poul Holleman and Luc van Weelden in November 2007, together they work on multimedia installations and performances. Recent work is the installation Klank|Kleur at the MuteSounds festival in the Hague, a festival especially for mutes. Klank|Kleur is an interactive video installation where the user can create video paintings with his or her voice. The interactive video installation was created so that the visitors of the festival were able to get an idea of the expressiveness of their own voice.
As a performance artist Luc currently plays with laptop, circuit bent toy instruments, DIY electronics, turntables and sensors. His main work is based around electronic music, interactive video and audio systems and the development of performance instruments through a connection between hardware and software.
