Atsuhiro Ito was born in 1965. He launched his career as a visual artist in the late ’80s, and in ’98 began presenting sound performances at art exhibitions and so on. Ito made use of fluorescent lighting (which is also an element of his art installations) in the creation of an original musical device called the optron. He continues to refine the instrument while approaching sound and music from a contemporary-art-based perspective. In addition to his solo exhibition and performance projects, Ito is active in a number of musical units. One of these is Optrum, the explosively loud “extreme optical noise core band” consisting of Ito and drummer Yoichiro Shin. Between 2000 and 2005 Ito presented various sound (music)/visual image-related events at Off Site, the now-defunct gallery/free space in Yoyogi, Tokyo. The Optrum album Recorded was released in June 2006 on the label Unknownmix (Headz).

Born in 1978, Christine Abdelnour lives in France but is of Lebanese origin. After discovering improvised music in 1997 she began a process of self-taught study and sound experimentation using the alto saxophone.
She has developed a unique personal language, producing sounds that are close to those of electroacoustic music but on a purely acoustic instrument.
She approaches sound as a malleable material, rich in concrete textures which combine breath, silence and countless acoustic distortions. She has developed extended techniques and complex patterns of sound production, exploring the microtonal aspects of the saxophone and its high-pitched tones. She employs subtle tonguing techniques, unpitched breaths, spittle-flecked growls, biting, slicing notes and breathy echoing sounds from the bell of her horn. Far from any narrative effects, her music addresses the relation between listening and concepts of perception, time and space.

Andy Moor was born in London in 1962. He began his musical life in Edinburgh, Scotland playing guitar with the band Dog Faced Hermans, a multi faceted eclectic group that mixed energetic post punk energy with traditional tunes and improvisations…. In 1990 he moved to the Netherlands after an invitation to join Dutch band The Ex and continues to be a full time member of this band….the openess and versatility of the musicians in this group has brought them intocontact with many musicians from different scenes and backgrounds..including Tom Cora(cello), Han Bennink(drums), Wolter Wierbos(trombone), Djibril Diabate (kora) John Butcher (sax) and Anne james Chaton (sound poet).

dj sniff (Takuro Mizuta Lippit) was born in 1978. His musical work builds upon a distinct practice that combines DJing, instrument design and free improvisation. He arrived at STEIM in 2005 as a hardware intern, and lead the institution’s creative output as Artistic Director between 2007-2012.
