Looks like ammonia poisoning to me. Explains the red gills and why it happened at a high pH (NH4 > NH3). NH3 is very toxic, but normally quickly disposed of in the cycle or taken up by plants. If your nitrogen cycle is not good enough or cannot handle the fish load an NH3 spike can build op and kill the fish within a day.
