Workshop:

Creating Cacti

with Martijn Baas

28 Sep 2019
During this workshop, you will learn the art of grafting and design a cactus together with Martijn Baas. Grafting is a horticultural technique in which you join multiple plants and make them grow together. During this workshop, Martijn Baas will teach you the basics of grafting and inspire you to design your own cactus.

Grafting is a technique used to join two plants together. It is mostly used to get identical fruits on fruit trees like apples. The top part of these trees are grafted with shoots of the same mother tree and therefore produce the exact same variety of fruits. The same can be done with cacti.
When cacti are grafted, the bottom cactus will influence the flowering and growth time of the top cactus. Cacti from entirely different living environments (desert, snow or jungle) can be grafted together, resulting in a cactus of its own!

During this workshop, our expert grafter Martijn, will tell you the story of how he became interested in grafting and teach you how to start the practice yourself. You will graft cacti from a selection he assembled. So you'll be able to make your own little creation! We recommend leaving your new baby at Mediamatic for a week for the grafting to be effective.

Martijn Baas

'What makes grafting cacti unique, is that you have them in the broadest variety of shapes and behaviours you can think of and are still able to join them.'
With a background in Product Design, Martijn Baas has specialized in working with Mycelium, cultivating plants, Bonsai and a broad range of plant-shaping techniques. He also has a broad interest in topics like permaculture, analog electronics, game design and composing. He uses grafting as a way to play Dr. Frankenstein.
