24 students of the VAV-department of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie reflect on the topic of gentrification. The promising, young talents are invited to the 400m2 big exhibition space of the former industrial site DE SERVICE GARAGE.

Lot Meijers welcomes the visitors with her research on the typical western-european gallery desk. Hans Diemel and Cigdem Turek present a video installation in which the choreography of a fencing duell symbolizes the fluctuation of different groups of residents. Martha Jessen shows her sculptural vision of a burgeois one-family house next to huge Martini glasses built out of spaghetti by Reinilde Jonkhout. Marc Roig Blesa’s contemplation about philosophical structures is shown on huge banners and Mu Xue uses the duration of the project to communicate with people and reflect the talks in installations with everyday objects. Jan Pieter Kastelein plays the role of a contemporary troubadour, announcing news in daily poems. Last but not least the newest abstract paintings of the upcoming star Steven Bos are for sale at the exhibition.

The start of the project on January 16 is an outlook onto the works that will be made in DE SERVICE GARAGE. From January 24 to February 3rd the results and remains of the projects are presented.
The opening will be accompanied by a lecture program.
At 2 pm Sandra Derks gives her view on the Dutch funding landscape.
Afterwards 3 artists, who are involved in the organisation of exhibition spaces join in a panel discussion to talk about artist-run-spaces. The participants are Frank Ammerlaan (De Service Garage, Amsterdam), Gijs Frieling (W139, Amsterdam) and Bernd Trasberger (Cluster, Berlin)

At 6 pm writer and curator Jurriaan Benschop talks about the role of Berlin as the so called „capital“ of contemporary art. (please note that this lecture is held in Dutch.)
