This month, Intermission invites you to step into a funky groove with artists who revel in mixing and matching elements: from disparate genres, through traditional and unconventional instruments, to an arsenal of effects.

Knalpot (Eat Concrete) is an Amsterdam-based duo defying easy definition. Roaming the pastures of Rock, Jazz, Punk and Electronic music, they mix up traditional and unconventional instruments with a host of analogue effect boxes and loopers. On drums, Gerri Jäger extends his instrument with a set of signature percussion – cowbells, iron chains, a milk foamer, and more. Raphael Vanoli plays guitar with his left hand and a Casio toy keyboard with his right one. Knalpot's music is a fresh original experience consisting of minimal song structures, low fuzz riffs, stumbling grooves, clouds of chirps and swirls, tranquility and sonic noise sections. Their self-proclaimed rascal style has a modernizing combo sound that is reminiscent of 80's computer game aesthetics, a taste of the sound of London’s WARP label and is played with Led Zeppelin Rock attitude.

Bass Clef (Blank Tapes) is the human manifestation of a secret geographical synching of Bristol and east London, the sound of both being heavy, sparse, dubbed-out plates of bass and drum, from the just-cut whites of Dubstep back through D'n'B and Jungle, all the way to the original JA sources. Recording analogue basslines, and whipsmart drum programming onto four-track tape, Bass Clef is the sound of structure created, Black Ark-style, on the fly in the mixdown through guitar pedals and FX units. Tricky like AFX but as warm and disarming as a bear hug off the Pastels.

Pete Concrete (Eat Concrete) is a DJ, producer and the founder of Eat Concrete Records. Known for his eclectic taste, Pete Concrete is constantly trying to stretch the boundaries of modern Electronics, incorporating any style that catches his attention. His DJ sets mix together an experimental, hybrid combination of styles like Soul, Jazz, Hip Hop, Dubstep, Ambient and Techno.
