Kaiserberg Junction, Duisburg
New landscapes
In the shadow of the A40, numerous new landscapes have emerged unnoticed. At the Kaiserberg motorway junction, the ‘spaghetti knot’ of streets choreographs a space of unimagined complexity with uses that do not fit the image of a motorway at all: zoo and allotment garden, pony yard and fish farm, wetlands and village idyll coexist in neighbourly harmony under the sonorous din of the motorway.
A latent lack of interest in difficult urban spaces in the vicinity of traffic structures produces a vacuum of state organisation and presence in the middle of the city. A space that residents bring under social control largely at their own initiative. The locals have come to terms with this difficult space by charming, often civic-oriented self-regulation, they have come to use and appreciate it.
For B1/A40, the Kaiserberg junction landscape park has been created here, inviting to an excursion into the countryside. A walking trail leads to places between village idyll, biospheres and acoustic pressure, amongst which art projects have established themselves.
