The increase of solar panels is colouring our roofs blue and boost the production of local renewable energy in Amsterdam. In addition, Amsterdam is one of the leading cities concerning electrically powered vehicles such as cars, boats and bicycles.
This is a good thing, right?
There are always two sides to every coin. Solar installations generate renewable electricity during daytime, when demand is low. In the morning and evening, when electricity demand increases, the production reduces. Unfortunately, electricity is difficult to store for a later time. Therefor, we are still very much dependent on non-renewable resources during peak demand while throughout a sunny day we are burdening our grid with unused energy.
However, new innovations have made it possible for electrical vehicles to not only become electricity demanders, but also givers. The battery of an electric car can be used as a storage device, giving back energy to homes when parked on your driveway. This would mean you could cook your evening meal from the electricity left over in your car. Thereby decreasing the need for non-renewable energy sources in darker hours.
According to electric car producer Tesla, e-mobility could be the next step for households to become energy independent and get off the grid.

During this evening, we will further explore the possibilities for e-mobility to smarten up our grid. Together with (international) experts on mobility, energy and ICT we will pave the way to a new smart energy system where cars are integrated as essential storage capacity of energy.
