In 70 prints, 35 students from the Photography Department reveal the zeitgeist of their generation. The basic theme of the exhibition is Teenage Magazines, which has been broadly interpreted. The results vary from stand-alone images to short series in which the images' relationship to its context, a magazine, provides the essential framework. The autonomous character of the department is clearly visible in the exhibition, which contains still lifes, nudes, family portraits, reproductions and form experiments.
It is part of the philosophy of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie for students to move beyond the walls of the institution at an early stage in their education. The Photography Department of this academy is known as a major breeding ground for talent and has produced many internationally recognised photographers including Rineke Dijkstra, Inez van Lamsweerde, Charlotte Dumas, Julika Rudelius and Hellen van Meene.
Opening
Teenage Magazines will be opened on Thursday, 10 March, at 17:30 by Tijmen van Grootheest, chair of the Board of Governors of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie. On Thursday, 17 March, Ine Lamers, photographer and head of the Photography Department at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, will hold a guided tour of the exhibition.
