While doing the design research for the mediamatic, I noticed a recurring and pragmatic choice of material that became apparent over the past decades at the art centre - IBC tanks.
Intermediate Bulk Containers (IBCs) have a history deeply embedded in the need for cost-effective bulk material storage. It provides a transportation solution for moving large quantities of liquids, powders, and granular materials in various industries. Given its widespread availability as a repurposed resource, I utilized its potential to develop a series of urban furniture.
Several types of IBCs are popular as standard transport containers, including those made of plastic, steel, and composite materials. Each type has its advantages and is suited to different applications. Plastic IBCs are lightweight and corrosion-resistant, while steel IBCs are durable and suitable for heavy-duty use. Here, I typically focused on the existing design solutions from the Mediamatic's history, the plastic IBCs. This design proposal is made possible with some welding on the steel frames and some woodbord as extra materials must be cut to fit into the container's rim.
