American artist and writer Jill Magid is born in 1973. In her work, Magid forms intimate relationships with systems of power, including police, secret service, CCTV and forensics. Magid seeks – in her own words – "the potential softness and intimacy of their technologies, the fallacy of their omniscient point of view, the ways in which they hold memory (yet often cease to remember), their engrained position in society (the cause of their invisibility), their authority, their apparent intangibility and, with all of this, their potential reversibility."
The Spy Project (2008)
In 2005 betrok de AIVD een nieuw gebouw. Volgens Nederlandse regelgeving moest een percentage van het budget worden opgemaakt aan kunst voor het nieuwe gebouw. De AIVD vroeg Magid om de AIVD te voorzien van een 'menselijk gezicht'. Van 2005 tot 2008 nam Magid interviews af met medewerkers en schreef korte beschrijvingen van elk persoon. Dit materiaal vatte ze samen in een installatie bij Stroom in Den Haag. Een deel ervan werd door de AIVD geconfiskeerd, evenals het boek dat Magid naar aanleiding van het project schreef. Het materiaal is bij FACELESS voor het eerst weer in Nederland te zien.
