Koeien in de kerk van Durgerdam

This is the Durgerdam church during the floods of 1916. Because the water rose to such a high level, the cows were brought to the only safe place: the church. The dikes of Waterland were broken through on several places and the independent villages were all heavily damaged by the water. After the floods the villages never really recovered the financial damages they suffered. Gratefully Amsterdam stepped in after the floods and bought the area north of 't IJ for a relative small sum of money. This means that in reality Noord is a ninety year old colony of Amsterdam! Some villages are still trying to cultivate their own cultural identity by organizing their own events. A good example of this are the events surrounded the welcoming of Sinterklaas. «دورخردام» — هذه هي كنيسة «دورخردام» خلال فيضانات 1916، إذ كسحت المياه المنطقة بأكملها وبقيت الكنيسة وحدها فوق مستوى ارتفاع المياه، حيث تم إدخال البقر إليها لينجو هناك بسلام. سد «زيدايك» الحاجز للمياه تَكسَّر في عدة نقط، والقرى التي كانت وراءه تَضرَّرت بشكل مهول! خلَّفَت الحادثة عددًا قليلاً من الخسائر في الأرواح، لكن الخسائر المادية لم يتمكن تعويضها قط. اغتنمت أمستردام الفرصة عام 1921 لتتولى أمور كل شيء. بعبارة أخرى فالشمال إذن هو مستعمرة أمستردام التي لم يبلغ عمرها 90 سنة بعد! بعض القرى ما زالت تحاول بناء هويتها، وتنظم سنويًّا احتفالها الخاص بالسانت نيكولاس. Dit is de kerk van Durgerdam tijdens de watersnood van 1916. Het water stond zo hoog dat de kerk de enige plek was waar de koeien nog in veiligheid gebracht konden worden. De Waterlandse zeedijk was op verschillende plaatsen doorgebroken en de zelfstandige dorpen achter de dijk werden enorm beschadigd. De dorpen zijn er, ondanks het geringe aantal doden, nooit meer financiëel boven op gekomen. Amsterdam maakte dankbaar gebruik van de problemen ten Noorden van 't IJ en kocht het land voor een zachte prijs. Noord is dus eigenlijk een kolonie van Amsterdam die nog geen 90 jaar oud is! Sommige dorpen proberen nog steeds hun eigen identiteit te cultiveren en organiseren onder andere jaarlijks hun eigen intocht van Sint Nicolaas.
