So Long Snow gaat over sneeuw en winters. Of eigenlijk de herinnering aan sneeuw en ijs, nu die echte koude winters niet meer terug lijken te komen.

De Nederlandse winterse herinneringen die zijn verbonden aan ijs en aan schaatsen, aan krabbelen over een bevroren vijver, aan een Elfstedentocht die ieder jaar plaats vindt, maar alleen in de hoofden en harten van de Nederlanders. (Uit het interview met Karen Røise Kielland door Erica Smits.)

Harry Otten schreef het boek Winters van toen over de echte winters van de vorige eeuw. En sluit naadloos aan bij wat Kielland voor ogen heeft met haar voorstelling. Het vasthouden van herinneringen die zo kwetsbaar en vluchtig kunnen zijn. Want wat blijft er over als de winter verdwenen is? Wat doe je als langzaam je herinneringen lege beelden blijken te zijn?

So Long Snow is woensdag 9 t/m zo 13 dec te zien in hetveem theater (actuele info www.hetveemtheater.nl) en zal in 2010 te zien zijn in het Hedmark Teater te Hamar, Noorwegen.

Blood for Roses bestaat uit Karen Røise Kielland (NO) en Anne Rooschüz (DE). Zij maken locatievoorstellingen met een documentair karakter en waren vooral op festivals te zien zoals het Over het IJ festival 2008. Blood for Roses hernam in 2008 bij hetveem theater de voorstelling The Nature of Hunting. So Long Snow zal vanaf 2010 op tournee gaan in Noorwegen als Nederland. www.blood-for-roses.com

So Long Snow speelt zich af in een toekomst waarin ijs en sneeuw niet langer bestaan. Deze afwezigheid is voelbaar.
Het weer heeft zijn krakende koude verloren en biedt de mensheid niet langer schrale troost. De pracht van een wit besneeuwd landschap dat menselijk verdriet kan verzachten, het zingende ijs onder je noren tijdens een lange schaatstocht en het geluk van spelende kinderen in de sneeuw, het leeft alleen nog in de herinnering van een kleine groep mensen.
Die mensen kunnen de winter niet meer terugbrengen, maar willen niks vergeten. Kunnen we het smelten van onze herinneringen tot stilstand brengen? Hoe moeten we afscheid nemen?

In the evocative production So Long Snow, former TV weatherman Harry Otten plays himself, as a weatherman.

Thursday 10 December sees the premiere of Blood for Roses/hetveem production’s nostalgic performance So Long Snow.

So Long Snow is about snow and winters. Or, rather, the recollection of snow and ice – now that those truly cold winters of bygone years seem unlikely to ever return.

Collective Dutch memories of winter are inextricably bound up with ice and skating, with scrambling across frozen ponds and with the ice-skating marathon the Elfstedentocht – which still takes place every year, but nowadays only in the hearts and imaginations of the Dutch population.

Harry Otten is the author of Winters van Toen (Winters of Yesteryear), a book about the great winters of last century. Its subject connects seamlessly with what Kielland had in mind for this piece: the retention of memories that can be so very fragile and fleeting. What remains when winter has gone? What do you do when your memories turn out to be mere empty frames?

So Long Snow will be performed at hetveem theater from Wednesday 9 to Sunday 13 December (For up-to-date information, see www.hetveemtheater.nl
It will also be performed in Hedmark Teater in Hamar, Norway, in 2010.

Blood for Roses is Karen Røise Kielland (NO) and Anne Rooschüz (DE). They create site-specific productions with a documentary character that are mainly performed at festivals, including the 2008 Over het IJ festival. Blood for Roses reprised The Nature of Hunting at hetveem theater in 2008.

So Long Snow takes place in a future, where ice and snow no longer exist. This absence is palpable.
The weather has lost its biting chill and no longer offers humanity its cold comfort. The splendor of a snow-white landscape that could soothe human sorrow, the ice singing beneath one’s gliding blades on a long skate trip, and the joy of children playing in the snow: all these live on in the memory of just a small group of people.
These people cannot bring winter back, but they want to forget nothing. Can we prevent the our memories from melting away? How can we say goodbye?
