Amiri Baraka is an icon of Afro-American poetry. With clear language he creates rhythmical, socially critical poems that are intended to be read aloud. Since the 1960s he has regularly worked with jazz musicians, such as Albert Ayler, Sun Ra and David Murray. In his Speech Quintet he performs with prominent band leaders and improvisers from New York. Amiri Baraka has published over 40 books, initially as LeRoi Jones, with poetry, fiction, drama and essays, including texts about jazz and blues.
