Build your own plant-sensor

Friday December 7, 13:00-18:00

In the age of efficiency, why should you have to guess when to water your plants? And why merely water them when you can have precise information about the soil moisture, light levels, and air temperature... texted or tweeted to you. During this workshop, Hans Crijns, the developer of the GrowGuard, will teach you how to put together the GrowGuard, and how you can hack it in order to let it work together with other sensors. Tickets for this sci-fi-like workshop are available on our website.

Hans Crijns developed GrowGuard - a wireless monitoring system for plants - because he grew tired of not knowing why his plants were withering away. GrowGuard is a networked system made to tweet or text you about your plants’ desires for humidity, light, and temperature.

To keep in line with the Mediamatic way, the GrowGuard workshop will plant the roots, not just green the leaves. You will learn how to solder a circuit board, what different sensors imply and how they are implemented by GrowGuard. If you do not want to receive individualized information digitally and would prefer to see what your plant needs, worry not. The workshop will also cover Moistly, an analogue simplified version of GrowGuard where all you need to respond to is a flickering lamp and a quiet beep.
