Franklin Furniture is maybe my favorite store in the whole world. That might sound a bit extreme, but I’ve given it some thought and I think it’s not an exaggeration. I actually really dislike shopping, and at first I was confused by Franklin
Furniture – a warehouse “store” that specializes in used office furniture. There are no prices on anything and that is usually a bad sign, and it’s not really a walk-in customer-service kind of a place. Franklin Furniture kind of exists in a liminal space between a storage facility and a museum to Detroit-area businesses, and it so happens that it’s a place where you can also buy, rent, or borrow things. If you like office supplies and office-related things you will love Franklin Furniture. Basically Jim, the owner, stocks anything that would have been useful in an office – old whiteboards with office meeting notes still
on them, flat files from the Detroit Free Press, filing cabinets, chairs, cubicle partition walls, old fax machines, rolodexes, a punch clock, coffee makers, etc. Jim is really nice and usually open to helping you find things. He also is very knowledgeable about Detroit’s recent past, especially with regards to the movements of area businesses. The two guys who work for him, Mike & Dave, are also great. It’s really a
spectacular place.
