In this edition of Biotalk the arts and sciences will provide us with a platform to consider aquatic life in the framework of alternative harvesting. How can we work with aquatic life and the natural cycle of life and death in a sustainable way? What role could algae play in clean-energy harvesting and the biobased industry? Can washed-up jellyfish be repurposed to make a durable material? We invite sound and visual artist Sabina Ahn, designer Charlotte van Alem and researcher Dr. Ben van den Broek to explore these questions and more.

Sabina Ahn - Visual and Sound Artist

Performs with Sonomatter, a sound installation in which the bioelectrical signal of microorganisms, including algae, is transformed to sound.

The performance is followed by a talk about Sonomatter. 

Charlotte van Alem - Art and Design Research  

Inspired by the growing number of dead jellyfish in the Baltic Sea, her project sets out to explore the possibility of creating sustainable material from jellyfish.  

Ben van den Broek - Wageningen Food and Biobased Research  

On microalgae and the biorefinery thereof. He will discuss why algae are a compelling source for a biobased economy.
