He received his PhD from the University of Florida, where he studied the emission of gamma ray bursts from rocket-triggered lightning flashes. After his PhD he moved to Groningen in order to investigate how to image lightning with the Dutch radio telescope LOFAR. As a result of Brian's work, LOFAR is capable of resolving the shape of entire lightning flashes in full 3D and time with very high precision, and has been recognized as the best lightning radio imaging instrument in the world. Recently, Brian has used this success to make new breakthroughs in how lightning gets started and grows through the thunderstorm, and has received multiple awards for his work.
