In the past decade, while politicians have been justifying the war on terror, fortifying borders, and proclaiming the failures of multiculturalism, artists and scholars have honed their imagination in the opposite direction- they have turned to face the lived realities of mixed societies and the possibilities of a cosmopolitan outlook. In his lecture, Nikos Papastergiadis will examine the conjunction between the recent theoretical debates on cosmopolitanism and the contemporary visual practices that have woven the act of hospitaity in their form.
Nikos Papastergiadis is Professor at the School of Culture and Communication at the University of Melbourne. His current research focuses on the investigation of the historical transformation of contemporary art and cultural institutions by digital technology. His publications include Modernity as Exile (1993), Dialogues in the Diasporas: Essays and Conversations on Cultural Identity (1998), The Turbulence of Migration (2000), Metaphor and Tension (2004), Spatial Aesthetics: Art Place and the Everyday (2006), as well as numerous essays which have been translated into over a dozen languages and appeared in major catalogues such as the Sydney, Liverpool, Istanbul, Gwanju, Taipei and Lyon Biennales.
Through 2012, Museum De Paviljoens programmes under the general title The Dutch Identity? The second group exhibition in the series The Dutch Identity? Moniek Toebosch, Alicia Framis, Gabriel Lester, Jennifer Tee et al is on view in Museum De Paviljoens from 31 October 2010 to 3 April 2011.
