She is an architect whose research interests embrace a wide range of issues regarding the design of homes and neighbourhoods, in relation to supporting older people’s lifestyles and aspirations and ensuring accessibility and inclusion for people of all ages. She is the co-originator with Professor Bill Hillier of the 'space syntax' computer-based representations, analytic techniques and research methodologies that have become the basis for configurational analysis of building layouts and urban places. These have been used successfully to diagnose design problems in urban and housing layouts, particularly the relationship between built environment variables and crime.
