Workshop: How to wASH?

Creating detergent from ash

8 Eyl 2017

Ash is the residue left after the combustion of wood. The lye obtained by leaching ashes is a highly concentrated solution, containing properties for washing and for making soap. Designer Caroline Jacob reveals the properties of this residue by creating a site-specific laundry detergent at Mediamatic - an entirely natural and environmentally safe laundry detergent that has no smell. Come and join us to learn how to make your own laundry detergent. Cooking tools, old rags and household remedies might be involved, as much as reconsidering our obsession with hygiene and cleanliness!

Researching the cleanliness of ash

Ash, a byproduct of Mediamatic ETEN’s waste circulation, appears an appropriate conduit to tackle Mediamatic’s challenges. Caroline Jacob revisited the material through heirloom recipes and generated a natural and ecologically safe laundry detergent that reuses only ingredients found on-site.

From powder-like substance to foamy goodness

During the workshop you will learn about soap creation, using novel and archetypal techniques. Starting with a theoretical explanation of its process, the day continues with the acquirement of ash from Mediamatic's grounds, then the search for other suitable materials and consequently with the actual, hands-on making of soap. Get your hands dirty by becoming clean! At the end of the day you can take your self-made detergent home.
