workshop: Susanne Duijvestein

Design your own Shroud

with Femke van Gemert

8 Eyl 2019

Have you ever thought about what you would wear when you die? This fall, we will breathe new life into an old Dutch tradition with a series of workshops. The workshop invites participants to actively think about their passing and to design their own burial shroud. Three different textile artist will host the workshops, with the first one being Femke van Gemert. In her own work, she upcycles waste textile, applying all kinds of sewing, braiding and weaving techniques.

Close up of Textile work by Femke van Gemert -

What you will do

First, funeral director and Still Life curator Susanne Duijvestein will introduce you to the tradition of the burial shroud, including its meaning and practicalities. Then, with the help of Femke van Gemert, you will start designing your own shroud. You will create a burial shroud out of old fabrics that are meaningful to you. For example: an old dress, your grandmother’s sheets, your father’s favourite shirts or other cloth. With it, you start designing your shroud's model, color and details and will apply specific techniques taught by the artist. You will not finish the shroud during this single workshop. The idea is that you make a start during the workshop and continue working on it as a slow process.

Femke van Gemert

Femke van Gemert is a textile artist. She creates objects from discarded textiles. Every piece of textile that she uses has been eaten, digested and discarded by society. With the use of what is already there, her work narrates the beauty of imperfection and decay. Combined in a new frame, the used fabrics tell a story.
