Workshop: Filippo Iannone

Design your own Shroud

with Nienke Hoogvliet

10 Nov 2019

Have you ever thought about what you want to be wearing when you die? This autumn, we will breathe new life into an old Dutch tradition with a series of workshops. This workshop invites participants to actively think about their passing and to design their own burial shroud. Three different textile artists will host the workshops, the third being Nienke Hoogvliet. In her own work, she experiments with herbs, unusual materials and dyeing methods.

What you will do

First, funeral director and Still Life curator Susanne Duijvestein will introduce you to the tradition of the burial shroud, including its meaning and practicalities.

In this edition with Nienke Hoogvliet, you will create a death shroud from a natural fabric and you will treat this with herbs and other organic materials. She will teach you the effect of these herbs and the beneficial substances they release onto our skin. After deciding on the design and patterns, you can start applying the herb printing techniques. The idea of this workshop is that you determine the design of your shroud, start creating and bring it back home to continue working on it.

Nienke Hoogvliet

In general Nienke examines the possibilities of using organic products out of the sea. She highlights huge sea pollution problems, by showing that the organic sea (waste) materials can be (re-)used. In her previous project SEA ME Nienke made a knotted yarn of seaweed.
