Chinese Angelica has been used for more than one thousand years as a spice, tonic and medicine. Also known as Dong Quai, especially in traditional Chinese medicine, this plant is amongst the most used herbs for treating menstrual irregularities and especially amenorrhea (the absence of menstruation). It's also traditionally used as a postnatal tonic. It is regularly used by herbalists in western herbal formulations to "move" the blood, improve nourishment and stimulate the menses. For all of these uses, Dong quai is sometimes also called the "female ginseng".
