Through a one-hour experience, EAT presents a seven-course piano composition paired with flavours that tell unique stories about time and place, such as aged miso produced on the island of Terschelling and plums from a 200-year-old tree. Energising compositions by Henk van der Meulen and a Japanese vegan breakfast served on handmade bowls by ceramic artist Akihiro Nikaido bring what is needed to begin your day in a more attentive way.

Artist and pianist Tomoko Mukaiyama explains that during EAT, we sow the seeds, so that we can harvest the rewards in the hours that follow. She is interested in how people in Amsterdam spend their mornings. As many of us are stuck in a cycle of repetitive, easy meals and mind-numbing screen time, Mukaiyama feels the urge to disrupt this.

“Because the way I spend my morning strongly impacts my entire day, I created EAT. This performance is designed so that flavours engage in a dialogue with sounds, making you hyper-aware. After attending, you will find a new focus, allowing you to appreciate the subtle details that often go unnoticed.”

About the Artist

Tomoko Mukaiyama is a Dutch-Japanese pianist, visual artist and director based in Amsterdam. In 1991 she was the first Japanese pianist to win the prestigious Dutch Gaudeamus competition and in 1993 she won the Muramatsu Prize in Japan, which is awarded to an outstanding musician. She has been engaged by many prestigious orchestras and ensembles throughout the world, like the Ensemble Modern in Frankfurt, the London Sinfonietta and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, among many others. Tomoko pushes on the boundaries of the classical music world; she has a fascination for offbeat contemporary art projects and plays with the conventions around her instrument, her profession and its performance. Tomoko uses her experience as a concert pianist to bring new dimensions to the concert space – as a multi-modal artist she develops performing arts projects and art installations that combine music with modern dance, fashion and visual art.
