Closely modeled on the director's own experiences Bill Douglas's trilogy provides a painfully intense picture of a harsh upbringing marked by poverty, isolation and the complex family background of a boy who only gradually discovers that his father is the man who lives down the road and that his mother is in an asylum.
Inspired by Soviet montage, silent cinema and the European art film Douglas's films seem fiercely, bleakly unsentimental, making only sparse use of dialogue and camera movement. But they also include moments of intense exhilaration, Douglas later describing the cinema as his real home, a palace of dreams offering magical contrast to the outside world where "whether in the village or the city, whether I was seven or seventeen, it always seemed to be raining or grey."
