The Origins of Innocence

16 Eki 2009
22 Kas 2009

In his first European solo exhibition, organized by V2_ in collaboration with FACT (Foundation for Art and Creative Technology, Liverpool), Bernie Lubell (US) bridges the mechanical character of the industrial revolution with the social interaction of the Web 2.0 age using simple principles of mechanical linkage that involve the audience.

Bernie Lubell’s work shows that interactive art in 2009 need not always be digital. The viewers themselves will operate these massive installations by means of cranks, wheels and pedal mechanisms. The Origins of Innocence is about movement and connectedness, cause and effect. Setting a machine in motion by performing an innocent action in one place, the visitor generates inexplicable movements and sounds at a completely different location.

Lubell's work refers to the groundbreaking activities of the French physiologist Etienne Jules Marey (1830–1904), who had an enormous influence on the development of cinema, photography and scientific disciplines including medicine and aviation.
