It is a workshop in 2 parts.
-DAY 1-
We begin the workshop with the question ‘What does decay look like?’ We focus on aspects of technological decay. We watch examples of contemporary artworks that examine these questions including Takeshi Murata’s ‘Untitled (Silver)’, Jacob Ciocci’s ‘Booty Melt’, and excerpts from Paper Rad’s 'Trash Talking’ DVD. Following these discussions we explore internet-based video projects in which artists placed themselves in a curatorial role to express their ideas. We examine Kari Altmann’s ‘Fossils and Minerals’ and John Michael Boling’s gooooooooooogle.com. We learn about the greasekit web plugin to allow us to manipulate our own selected online videos. We begin to learn Datamoshing. This technique exploits the basic structure of many common digital video formats in which I-frames (image frames) and P-frames (motion frames) are sequenced to compress files to manageable sizes. We hand-manipulated these frame sequences to create intentional visual glitches.
-DAY 2-
Using a selection of internet videos that each participant selects around a topic of their choice we continue to explore Datamoshing.
-Post-Workshop-
We upload our finished Datamosh videos and split-screen internet video selections to Peter. Peter compiles them and uploads this mix-video to youtube.
