Bert Timmermans stands for an interdisciplinary view, detailed theoretical and conceptual research and charged creations.

Because of his background as historian and art historian, Timmermans is fascinated by the layering time leaves behind in the tracks of the (collective) memory. The multi-layered nature of reality and time is something that frequently hits the surface in the techniques he uses. Timmermans’ creations take form after multiple sessions, where layers are applied and scraped off again, information is being added, deleted or erased. He works with a variation of mixed media, paint, ink and photocollages, but never abandoning the fragile paper as its traditional carrier.

For his first expo in MX7 GALLERY, he has been working in series, which resulted in ((pseudo-) documentary) creations. It’s here where Timmermans gets into dialogue with multiple scientifical disciplines (amongst others history, art history, antropology,...) generally, and particulary with the works of Claude Lévi-Strauss, Aby Warburg, Walter Benjamin and last but certainly not least W.G. Sebald.

His artistic research is evolving more to the proces of imaging and staging, (de)contextualization, the relation between text and image, and between the “Fremd- and Eigentext”. This way he looks for the interface between art and science.
